CKA Stands with the Black Community
and Denounces Police Brutality

Washington, DC — The Council of Korean Americans (CKA) mourns and is deeply troubled by the tragic death of George Floyd. Our hearts go out to the Minnesota community and families impacted by the loss of Mr. Floyd’s life. As a community of Korean American leaders, we stand with Black communities in Minnesota and across the country that are collectively calling for the full accountability of the police officers involved in this horrible incident.

We also recognize the historic injustices against the Black community and the need to address the broader and systemic racism that still persists in our country today. Acts of race-based hate and fear have no place in America.

We join Black communities in urging our national, state, and local government leaders to address bigotry, discrimination, and violence against them and to deliver substantive and meaningful solutions.

We further fully support the freedom of expression and assembly to protest endemic injustices and to demand that our governing authorities right these wrongs. At the same time, we denounce acts of violence, vandalism, and destruction of property in our cities and neighborhoods. We must channel our frustration through our voice and political participation as one community. We need to vote in upcoming elections, participate in the 2020 Census, and actively hold our leaders accountable to make lasting reforms to our system and culture.

Executive Director of CKA, Abraham Kim, states, “CKA is working with our elected representatives, civic partners, and local community leaders across the United States to prevent further acts of racially-charged violence and injustice, and build upon the importance of collaboration and solidarity across all communities.”
