His work has received the PEN/Hemingway Award, the American Book Award, the Heartland Prize in Fiction, and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, and has been named finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He has also written stories and articles for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Time (Asia), Granta, Conde Nast Traveler, Food & Wine, and many other publications. Chang-Rae also serves as the Ward W. and Priscilla B. She authored the award-winning fiction collection Swimming in Hong Kong (Willow Springs Books), the Paterson Fiction Prize recipient, and the sole finalist for the AWP Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction, the Spokane Prize, and the Asian Books Blog Award. Her writing has been recognized by Nimrod International Literary Journal, The South China Morning Post/RTHK, and Santa Fe Writers Project and supported by PEN-Emerging Voices, VONA, and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. The inaugural English Literature Ph.D. graduate of the City University of Hong Kong lives in Hawai’i, home of her family since 1904.
